Engagement rate tells you how much a post moved the people who saw it. Add up every interaction the network counts (likes, comments, shares, saves, sometimes clicks) and divide by a base. The base is usually the post’s views or reach (engagement by reach), or the account’s followers (engagement by followers). Multiply by 100 for a percentage.
The two bases answer different questions. By reach, it shows how good the post was for the people it reached, which is fairer when one post travels far beyond your followers. By followers, it shows how active your audience is, which is easier to compare between accounts. Pick one, say which one you use in reports, and compare posts on the same network: a 3% rate means something different on LinkedIn and on TikTok.
